Avetik Vardanyan: The wrestlers are in good shape before the European Championship

Head coach of the Armenia freestyle wrestling youth team has talked about the expectations of the upcoming European Championship and the athletes’ injuries during a press briefing.

“This year we are taking part in the European Championship with 9 wrestlers. Last year’s European champions Arsen Harutyunyan, Vazgen Tevanyan and Hovhannes Maghakyan could also participate this year but will miss the championship because of injuries. No one is insured of it.,” the coach noted.

Avetik Vardanyan told why Armenia won’t have a representative in the 92 kg weight category.
“We lack rivalry here. In this weight category Lyova Gevorgyan from the junior team was named Armenia’s champion and he will take part in the European Championship among cadets.”

The head coach of the Armenia youth team assured that Arsen Harutyunyan, Vazgen Tevanyan and Hovhannes Maghakyan will be recovered till the World Youth Championship.

“I think they will be ready for the World Youth Championship. After the European Championship we will discuss all the issued concerning them with the federation and coaching staff. At this moment they are included in the junior age group. As for the World Championship among adults I can say after the European Championship the wrestlers will have 35-40 days to recover and I think they will be fit for the World Championship among adults.”

At the end of the conversation Avetik Vardanyan told the team had spent the preparatory phase successfully.
“The wrestlers are in a good physical condition. Friday will be the last tough day, we will organize control fights. Let’s expect good results,” the coach said.

Let’s recall the wrestlers going to Pontevedra, Spain for the European Championship: Harutyun Manukyan (57 kg), Hrachya Margaryan (61 kg), Gegham Galstyan (65 kg), Arman Andreasyan (70 kg), Hrayr Alikhanyan (74 kg), Arman Avagyan (79 kg), Mher Markosyan (86 kg), Kolya Harutyunyan (97 kg) and Ashot Rushanyan at125 kg.

The team will leave for the championship on June 5 and will return on June 10.
