President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia Gagik Tsarukyan has received in Olympavan the champions and prize winners of the European Championships ended a few days ago and the teams’ head coaches and members.
The ANOC president spoke about the Armenian athletes’ performances at the European Wrestling Championship in Bucharest, European Weightlifting Championship in Batumi and Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Polish Szczecin.
Gagik Tsarukyan noted the results were good but there is still a place to strive for more. Referring to the results of the Armenia wrestling team he said.
“We were expecting only gold medals of you. Though bronze medal is not a bad result you had to register better results. I was very happy with Arsen Julfalakyan’s result, it was worth gold for me because being so busy he also manages to perform on such a high level and we should also take into account his age.”
The ANOC president said he was very happy about Arsen Julfalakyan’s becoming NA deputy as he touches upon the sports problems and tries to find solutions.
Speaking about newly-crowned freestyle wrestling European champion Arsen Harutyunyan Gagik Tsarukyan highly appreciated the 19-year-old wrestler’s achievement.
“I’m surprised how bravely you fought losing 0:8 but then mustered up and became champion showing the whole world our strength. The whole world was watching and admiring you.”
The ANOC president assessed the result of the weightlifting team as excellent and noted that there are great expectations of the weightlifters too. Gagik Tsarukyan also touched on Andranik Karapetyan’s failure at the weigh-in ceremony noting that the Armenian weightlifter is very talented and strong but misfortunes follow him.
“Andranik I think you should go to church,” said the ANOC president smiling. Andranik Karapetyan told he had prepared well for the championship but indeed some bad luck followed him, and as for the church he had already assisted it.
Gagik Tsarukyan also highly appreciated the Armenian gymnasts’ performances at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championship where Vahagn Davtyan had won a bronze medal in the rings exercise.
At the end of the meeting Gagik Tsarukyan noted everything would be done to present properly at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“This time we are going to refuse the wild card because only the participation doesn’t do us honor; we must struggle for the highest places,” ended his speech the ANOC president.
